Bus-powered hub

A USB hub that requires no external AC power to operate.  It provides electrical current at a max. of 100mA to each USB port.

Hub
A USB device that allows additional connections to the USB bus.

Multi-function hub
A USB hub that combines multiple USB functions into a single package.

Root hub
A USB hub that is attached to the PCI host controller.  It provides 500mA to each USB port.

Self-powered hub

What's a USB hub?
A USB hub provides more USB ports for your computer so you can connect multiple devices to your computer via a single USB port.  Even though it is as simple as an extension cord, it plays an important role on a USB bus.  Without a USB hub, you are limited to connecting only two USB devices as most computers come with only two USB ports.  Furthermore, a USB hub provides you with a convenient and easy way to access USB ports without crawling down the desk to find the connections.
