Digital camera doubles as MP3 player

Samsung Digimax 35 MP3

Not longer you have to bring separate devices with you to play your MP3 and to take digital photos. Samsung's new Digimax 35 MP3 takes care of your needs for portable digital music playback and digital imaging.

The convergence of MP3 player and digital camera has begun to take place when Fuji Film ships FinePix 40i -- the world's first mega-pixel camera with MP3 playback capability. However, FinePix 40i is positioned at the higher-end market with a dearly $600 price tag.

Like other entry-level cameras, Samsung's $200 Digimax 35 MP3 lacks a LCD preview screen and tops at 640 by 480 resolution. It does have a flash and a removable slot for CompactFlash media. A 16MB card is bundled with the package.

To switch between MP3 player and camera, you simply have to hit the mode button on the top of the unit. The built-in MP3 player only outputs music at 60dB, which is relatively weak compared to other stand-alone MP3 players.

In addition, when connected to USB port, Digimax 35 morphs into a USB webcam that gives you 15fps at max. Software bundle gives you everything you need to make video conferencing calls and to create neat panoramas. The camera also equips with a serial port for image retrievals. USB is needed to use the webcam.

Priced at $200, Samsung's Digimax 35 MP3 isn't alone in the market. Samsung's rival LG Electronics has jumped onto the bandwagon with its new Digital Music Eye, which does exactly the same thing as Samsung's product.
