Orange blends USB 2, FireWire together By Ian Chiu, November 17, 2000
Comdex 2000 USB 2.0 and FireWire may be in race for the future peripheral connectivity standard. Orange Micro. has managed to make them partners in its latest OrangeLink+ FireWire/USB 2.0 Hi-Speed PCI card, which is currently in showcase at Comdex in Las Vegas. The new combo card comprises of three FireWire 400Mbps ports (two external, and one internal) and four USB 2.0 Hi-Speed 480Mbps ports (three external, and one internal). There's also a USB 1.1 chipset for backward compatibility. So, you can say there are three different interface standards built-onto the card. Available in Feb. 2001 for $199.95, the package will contain a FireWire and a USB 2.0 A-to-B cable, both of which are 6 foot long. Orange Micro. will also bundle a copy of Adobe Premiere LE for the Mac and Ulead Video Studio DV SE for Windows, and Mac/PC software drivers. This product will give you the best of both worlds. Any legacy machines can be upgraded to accommodate the next generation high-speed peripherals. During this week, the company also introduces several different products under USB 2.0 and FireWire specification. Notably, the industry's first FireWire-based webcam, named iBot, is the most interesting of all.
