NEC first to receive USB 2 certification
By Ian Chiu,
November 16, 2000

Comdex 2000 NEC today announced its new USB 2.0 host controller (PD720100) has become the first USB 2.0 certified product in the marketplace.

The company is now granted with the right to display its certified product with the new "High-Speed" banner, as shown on the right. With the new logo, customers can easily identify the product that provides maximum compatibility and performance.

A USB host controller is actually the hardware implementation of the central point for all connections in the USB topology. It serves as the exchange point between each of the components of USB. It is either integrated into the motherboards or included in USB PCI/CardBus add-on cards.

NEC isn't the only manufacturer to produce the USB 2.0 host chips. Lucent's USS-2000, announced during the Intel Developer Forum in October, combines four 12Mbps USB 1.1 host controllers and one USB 2.0 controller. The presence of the USB 1.1 controllers is necessary to provide backward compatibility for current legacy devices.

The PD720100 controller differs from the USS-2000 in that it only has two USB 1.1 chips as opposed to four found on Lucent's USB 2.0 controller.

NEC's PD720100 controllers can also be found on the recently announced Belkin USB 2.0 PCI Card and Orange Micro. USB 2.0 PCI card.
